Solar Hot Water – Technical Corner (Geeks Only)

Ever since Evacuated glass tube technology was created, solar power can now be changed to heat energy efficiently during all four seasons. Sun rays can be turned to heat irrespective of the ambient temp of the collectors.

The inside and outside tubes are made out of incredibly strong borosilicate glass which are evacuated and fused together. The vacuum space between two glass layers forms excellent insulation to stop the heat loss from the inside to the outside. The outside of the inner tube is coated with the Ultra -Low Emission solar coating technology to absorb the most solar energy. This innovative coating was developed and patented by Himin Solar – the largest solar thermal manufacturer in the world.

When the sun’s rays strike the collector, the solar radiation passes through the clear glass of the outside tubes and is absorbed by the coating on the outside of the inner tubes. The solar power is transformed into heat energy by the coating surface and essentially heats the inner tube.

Either a heat-transfer fluid or the actual potable water to be used flows through tubes attached to the absorber and transfers the heat from it. The heated water is stored in a storage tank until needed. If additional heat is needed, it is provided by electricity or gas energy.

The Solar People install a solar hot water system which is a ‘pump’ solar hot water system that has circulation of water or glycol mixture (indirect loop) round the solar collector. The compact circulating pump moves around the water in between the collectors and the hot water cylinder. The water pump is generally run by a solar controller which only turns the pump motor on once the water inside the collector is hotter than the water within the tank. These types of pumps are extremely quiet, giving very little noise disturbance and only drawing around 28 watts.

Save money on your electricity bills and get a solar hot water system installed today, The Solar People can provide a free quote at your home.
